Floor Covering Problem, Perceived or Real?

cupping perceived or real problem

Floor covering is one of the largest financial investments most people will make for their home. When first installed your new carpet, hardwood floor, luxury vinyl or other floor covering will usually look attractive.  A few days, weeks or months later you are becoming concerned with its appearance. Suddenly your flooring is less attractive to you. Something has changed and you start to wonder, what is causing this problem with my floor covering problem? Am I perceiving it or is it real?

What Causes Floor Covering Problems?

Our Company, The Weinheimer Group has inspected thousands of floors throughout Oregon and Washington and we can assure you there is not a single cause of floor covering problems. Sometimes a problem is seen for the first time due to a change in lighting or rearrangement of a room. At times the problem that is being seen for the first time is not an actual problem. At other times, it is the start of what may become a catastrophic failure.

Perceived Floor Covering Problems

Flooring and floor covering problems come in many forms. Some problems are perceived, we become aware of or notice it. It may not be a problem at all. A shadow is being cast that makes an area appear darker, lighter or a different color. You suddenly notice areas of your carpet lining up that were previously not noticed, but they are part of the carpets pattern. A neighbor points out the difference in the grain of your new hardwood floor. They tell you that they don’t see this in their new hardwood laminate floor. You suddenly perceive a problem that is not there, your floor is real wood and their floor is a picture of hardwood. At other times a problem may be perceived or real.

Real or Perceived?

The light is now shining low through the window and suddenly your hardwood flooring appears slightly rippled or cupped. This may be a real problem for the appearance of ripples may be in a pattern. It may be no more than slight-normal cupping of a wide plank flooring that is seen under certain lighting conditions. It may be the start of a serious moisture concern. Perhaps there is a leaky pipe, high moisture under the house or a hardwood floor was installed when the moisture was not in equilibrium with the structure at time of installation.

Real Problems
